I’ve just finished the game last night! ^^
For me, the story was very good. True, it was about saving the whole world, just like many RPGs out there and kind of lose Suikoden story’s uniqueness (about a great change in a country). But just like Tierkreis, the plot is not written halfheartedly. The plot twist is great in my opinion, because I never guess the story will turned out like that and it made me want to continue playing so I can understand what actually is happening in this Suikoden world. Although maybe the story might looks a little rushed because Tsumugareshi doesn’t have time skip event (like suddenly we were told that three months have passed since the last battle) unlike the other Suikoden (Tierkreis included). It’s like we were chasing the bad boys to place A, then to place B, then to place C, then to place D without a break. (But maybe I just don’t realize about the time skip event because my japanese skill is not that good ^^;)
The gameplay is not too troublesome when you’re used to it. Magic and healing is not based on MP, but on materials which we can produce at HQ, so if you have 999 materials you can practically spam your magic and pwns the enemies as long as your Spirit Point (? I don’t know the name, but it’s the ammount of point you need to execute magic, fighting skill, and normal attack) is sufficient. But then again you can even restore that Spirit Point with your magic. But with this kind of set up, I think the game is not really well-balanced. I can beat the last boss in two rounds just by spamming my characters’ strongest attacks while having my healer heal their spirit points.
What I hate is we can’t freely move inside towns and even our own HQ. The interaction system in those place is point-and-click and it’s kind of make me sad because I can’t interact with my SoD. We can still interact with them, but only at the restaurant.
Also the characters available is just the worst:
1. We only have 18 characters (including the hero) who we can choose to fight with freely.
2. We can’t freely use the characters of the past (Torwald, Rolf, etc), they can’t even come to the present. The stars of destiny of the past ‘help’ the hero by giving their skills to the present stars of destiny.
3. Some of the characters are already deceased by the story so we don’t even get to see how they looks like. We only get “NAMEHERE (DECEASED PEOPLE)” without picture in the stone tablet.
4. Unite attack system is still around, but it’s more like the ‘AUTO’ option in which the characters involved attack random enemies. No more bishie sparkles for your pretty boys attack (We get Pretty Middle Aged Man Attack in this installment btw)
5. It’s my personal opinion, but those characters in the past? Some are visually way better than the characters in the present. But just ignore this point. XD
But I think what they lack in characters development (and the point-and-click system), they made it up with the story development. You’ll be surprised when you realized what is really happening in this Suikoden world.
I guess that’s all from me. Please forgive my bad English! ^^;

- And Thank you for sharing your opinion. And yes, I have heard about the point and click or no free roaming. A bit disappointed on that one…but I’m curious on the twist you have mentioned. Hope I could play it soon too. :)
Ah, it seems a bit rushed. Konami, I don’t mind waiting for another year…
